Water Fasting Benefits
Water Fasting: People may undertake water fasting to lose weight, for spiritual or religious reasons, or to try and combat particular health problems. Research suggests that occasional fasting may help with weight loss, although other methods may be more effective long-term.
To make sure that water fasting is done safely, people should prepare properly and choose a good time to go without food, when the body does not require too much energy.
Water Fasting Results
Most water fasts last between 24 to 72 hours. You should not follow water fast for longer than this without medical supervision.
Here are a few reasons why people try water fasting:
- Religious or spiritual reasons
- To lose weight
- For “detoxing”
- For its health benefits
- Preparing for a medical procedure
The main reason why people try water fasting is for its health benefits. That’s because several studies have linked water fasting with some impressive health benefits. This includes a lower risk of cancers, heart disease, and diabetes
Many cultures/religions include some fasting. The main reason for fasting is the same in all of these beliefs: Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing; resetting. Fasting is nature’s way of allowing your body to heal itself, and that rest is essential to the success of the process.
When you stop eating (start fasting) all the energy that has been used to gain energy from food is now being used for flushing toxins out of the system and boost the natural healing mechanism of the body.
Water cleanses, also known as a water fasting, are a type of fasting in which for a set period of time, you only consume water. Unlike many other fasting methods, while water fasting, you take zero calories.
The first thing to remember is that 60 – 70% of our body is WATER. So, it’s crucial that you drink enough quantity of water, which should not be less than 8 – 10 glasses daily, to support the cleansing process. Drinking not enough water is during water fasting is the problem we observe the most. The body gets dehydrated, as a result, it becomes more acidic, and the cells don’t get hydrated enough to keep the blood alkalized. This results in a slower cleansing process. Such a problem is solved by giving people fluids as IVs or Himalayan sea salt drinks to keep electrolytes up.
Water Fasting Benefits
A water fast is when a person does not eat and drinks nothing other than water.
There is no set time that water fasting should last for, but medical advice generally suggests anywhere from 24 hours to 3 days as the maximum time to go without food.
Throughout history, people have undertaken fasts for spiritual or religious reasons. But, water fasting is now popular in the natural health and wellness movements, often alongside meditation.
There are no scientific guidelines on how to start water fasting.
However, there are several groups of people who should not water fast without medical supervision.
This includes people with gout, diabetes (both types 1 and 2), eating disorders, older adults, pregnant women, and children.
If you have never water fasted before, it is a good idea to spend three to four days preparing your body for being without food.
You can do this by eating smaller portions at each meal or by fasting for part of the day.
Water Fast (24 to 72 hours)
During a water fast, you are not allowed to eat or drink anything besides water.
Most people drink two to three liters of water per day of a water fast.
The water fast lasts a total of 24 to 72 hours. You should not water fast for longer than this without medical supervision because of health risks.
Some people may feel weak or dizzy during a water fast and may want to avoid operating heavy machinery and driving to avoid causing an accident.
Post-Fast (1 to 3 days)
After the water fast, you should resist the urge to eat a big meal.
This is because eating a large meal after a fast may cause uncomfortable symptoms.
Instead, break your fast with a smoothie or smaller meals. You can start introducing larger meals throughout the day as you feel more comfortable.
The post-fast phase is especially important after longer fasts. This is because you may be at risk of refeeding syndrome, a potentially fatal condition where the body undergoes rapid changes in fluid and electrolytes.
This phase normally lasts a day, but people who fast for three or more days may need up to three days before they feel comfortable eating larger meals.
Water Fasting Before And After
Last year, I was trying to come up with novel ways to raise money for MacMillan Cancer who was a huge help to our family when my dad became terminally ill with a rare form of lung cancer. I was conscious of how desensitized I had become by the sheer volume of charitable requests on my facebook feed and figured I’d have to come up with something radical to make my plea for donations stand out.
Already aware of the growing trend in intermittent fasting for weight loss, I began to wonder what would happen to my body if I did not eat anything for a prolonged period of time. The more I researched extended water fasting, the more excited I became about its potential to help me raise money and benefit my overall health at the same time.

Try to avoid meat as best as you can; other animal products are off-limit as well, dairy products can also be consumed mindfully. Try to convert 75% of your diet into raw or steamed vegetables. The other 25% should also exclude high acidic foods. If your digestion is feeble, you may increase the amount of steamed or baked vegetables in your diet. Dinner should be completed at 19.00. After that, herbal tea and raw nuts can be consumed as an appetizer. It’s good to avoid sugar or foods with added sugar. We all know it’s a poison. So try to replace it with organic honey, maple syrup or date syrup or coconut sugar
Eat no fried food or foods cooked in oils.
When you do use oil if possible use avocado oil, cold-pressed organic olive oil, or flaxseed oil.

Can You Drink Water While Fasting
First I had to settle on duration to aim for. While most fasting practitioners recommend fasts between 5 and 14 days, I found some detailed accounts of people who had fasted for as long as 45 days and lived to tell the tale. I had a holiday booked and did not want to ruin it so I settled on 22 days as this felt long enough to get some meaningful data. I always think the measure of a goal is how intimidated you feel at the thought of achieving it and this scared the shit out of me so I knew it was ambitious enough.
